Cuffe Welcomes Carysfort-Maretimo Stream Funding
The Green Party has welcomed the release of funding for flood prevention works on the Carysfort-Maretimo Stream.
Green Party TD for Dún Laoghaire Ciarán Cuffe stated:
“Within months of the Green Party entering government, we had announced €3 million in funding for flood relief works at the Carysfort-Maretimo Stream.
“I’m delighted that the contract has been secured by the Council and approved by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
“It’s been difficult for those living in the area who have been affected by previous floods. Homeowners deserve protection from flooding and I hope that this announcement can bring some certainty to the situation.
“I will be asking the County Manager to proceed with these works immediately.”
Background on the Carysfort-Maretimo Stream
The Carysfort Maretimo Stream starts in the Three Rock Mountains and flows through heavily urbanised areas in Sandyford, Leopardstown, Stillorgan, and Blackrock before discharging into Dublin Bay. The stream has caused a number of flooding incidents in the past decade, most recently in July 2007 and July 2009. The objective of the Scheme is to enhance the channel capacity of the stream, and deal with other deficiencies along its length. The design criteria being used are in accordance with the recommendations of the Greater Dublin Strategic Drainage Study. On completion of the works, the capacity of the stream will be upgraded for the 1 in 100 year design storm event, taking account of additional rainfall intensity due to climate change.
