Cuffe calls for Carlisle Pier Restoration
The Green Party has called on the DĂșn Laoghaire Harbour Company to restore the Victorian Building on the Carlisle Pier in DĂșn Laoghaire Harbour.
CiarĂĄn Cuffe TD has urged the Harbour Company to remove the 1960s building works from the Carlisle Pier and reveal the fine Victorian structure dating from 1859 that lies underneath.
Green Party TD for DĂșn Laoghaire CiarĂĄn Cuffe stated:
“I want to see the original Victorian building restored and made available for public use. Up until the 1960s there was full public access to most of the Pier. The restored building would be a fantastic venue for cultural events such as those that take place during the Festival of World Cultures.
“Thankfully the Harbour Company’s proposal during the Celtic Tiger years for high-rise development on the Pier has been shelved. We should now concentrate on improving the Pier for the benefit of the people of DĂșn Laoghaire and visitors alike.
“It’s a golden opportunity to reveal the old Victorian building that stands half-hidden on the site, obscured by the twentieth century works. The 1965 additions were only intended to be temporary works anyway, so it's time for their removal. They were never an architectural masterpiece.
“Of course I want to see any asbestos that may be present removed through safe and careful works.
“Now is the time to give the Pier back to the people of DĂșn Laoghaire. I’ve asked the County Manager to work with the Harbour Company to restore the older building on the site.”
