Cuffe welcomes €15m fund for Councils tackling severe weather

Green Party TD for Dún Laoghaire Ciarán Cuffe has welcomed extra funding for local authorities to tackle the effects of severe weather.

Environment Minister John Gormley announced an additional €15 million in contingency funding for local authorities to cover exceptional costs associated with the extreme weather currently being experienced. The money will be available for those local authorities most in need of supplementary funding, as a contribution to exceptional costs as a result of the weather.

78% of new cars bought in 2009 are energy efficient

The Green Party has welcomed the "Energy in Transport 2009" report by Sustainable Energy Ireland today showing 78% of new cars bought in Ireland this year are energy efficient. This has led to a 12% reduction in CO2 emissions from new cars.

“Today’s SEI report shows that green policies do work. As a direct result of changes made by Environment Minister John Gormley to car tax and VRT, consumers have modified their behaviour and turned to fuel efficient cars.”

Dublin Bus should consider dropping fares for 'car free day' - Cuffe

Green Party transport spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe has called on Dublin Bus to provide free bus travel for commuters during European Mobility week (16-22 September) to encourage more people to switch to public transport. The week culminates in a car free day “In town without my car” on September 22nd.
