Contra Flow Cycle Lane for Newtown Avenue - Have Your Say

Newtown Ave Blackrock

A contra flow cycle lane has been proposed by the Council for Newtown Avenue between Idrone Terrace and Seapoint Avenue in Blackrock. If approved, it will form a key piece in the route of the Sandycove to Sutton Cycle Way.

Details of the proposals are summarised below. You can find a full brief here and the map here.

Council Proposal:

It is proposed to provide a 2m off road contra flow cycle track from Idrone Terrace to Seapoint Avenue. The provision of this cycle track will provide a link between a number of existing facilities that allow for the safe movement of cyclists which will encourage more sustainable travel choices.

The addition of the cycle track requires that the existing parking be “pushed out”. The relocation of the parking will require that a number of spaces be reduced or removed, as there would be less than the minimum width required for vehicles if the parking is retained.

Currently there are approximately 126 parking spaces on Newtown Avenue between Main Street Blackrock and Seapoint Avenue. The locations of the parking bays are shown on the attached drawing.

The design proposes to alter the parking on Newtown Avenue as follows:

Between Main Street Blackrock and Idrone Terrace: remove 0 spaces

Between Idrone Terrace and Maretimo Gardens West: remove 6 spaces and provide 3 new spaces on Idrone Terrace (a net loss of 3 spaces)

Between Maretimo Gardens West and Maretimo Gardens East: remove 0 spaces

Between Maretimo Gardens East and Seapoint Avenue: remove 15 spaces

Total spaces removed: 18

The removal of 3 spaces from the section of Newtown Avenue west of Maretimo Gardens West should have little impact on the parking regime in the area.

The remaining spaces (15) are being removed from the area between Maretimo Road and Seapoint Avenue where the parking usage is very low.
