Ciarán Cuffe
asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his
Department is drafting legislation or intends to draft legislation to
regulate the use of closed circuit television cameras on private
dwellings in residential areas. |

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. Lenihan):
There are provisions contained in the Data Protection Acts 1998 and 2003
which are designed to apply to personal data that is recorded through
the operation of CCTV systems or other monitoring equipment.
The Privacy Bill 2006 that is before the Seanad provides for a tort of
violation of privacy. The violations of privacy that are provided for in
the Bill include the subjection of an individual to aural or visual
surveillance. |
