Ciarán Cuffe asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government his plans to introduce legislation allowing for directly elected mayors for local authorities and town councils.

Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government (Mr. Roche): Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (Mr. Roche): I have no plans to introduce legislation allowing for directly elected mayors of local authorities. The provision for the direct election of mayors was repealed by section 7 of the Local Government (No. 2) Act 2003.
