The Green Party has welcomed the
launch of "SMARTER TRAVEL - A Sustainable Transport Future" by
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey TD today.
Green Party Transport Spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD said: "It
is vitally important that sustainability lies at the heart of
transport decisions, and the Green Party's commitment to this in
Government is evident in the publication of this plan.
"It is crucial that we invest in cycling, walking and public
transport as sustainable modes of travel that aren't dependent on
foreign oil. Proposals in this plan such as workplace travel plans
and the Green Schools travel programme can decrease car dependence
and congestion as well as reducing our Greenhouse gas emissions.
This plan charts a course toward a sustainable transport future.
"The Green Party in Government have brought forward measures to
start us on this sustainable course, such as the motor tax changes,
the cycle to work scheme and our commitment to 10% electric vehicles
by 2020."I welcome Minister Dempsey's commitment that the Smarter
Travel Plan will inform the review of Transport 21, and I have no
doubt that this will lead to more sustainable transport investment.
It is crucial that future transport decisions are integrated with
land-use planning and the Green Party in Government is committed to
making this a reality." |
