The Green Party has condemned a
decision by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to install a
commuter car park in an open space, known as the Circus Field, in
Blackrock Park in Dublin.
Green Party Councillor for Blackrock, Ruairí Holohan arrived
at the site at 7am this morning in an attempt to prevent works going
ahead. He was joined by local residents and members of An Taisce and
Green Ireland. Despite a stand-off between local representatives and
contractors and the involvement of Gardaí the works went ahead and
tarmacadam was laid on the surface.
Cllr Holohan said: "I have real
concerns about the destruction of open space in a public park, right
next to a Special Protection Area. I'd also question the safety of
the proposed entrance and exit for vehicles as it's on a Quality Bus
Corridor and is potentially very dangerous to road users.
"The County Manager should halt all works on the site until a proper
planning process takes place with input from local residents."
Green Party TD for Dún Laoghaire
Ciarán Cuffe said: "I'm disturbed by the creation of a permanent
public car park on the Circus Field in Blackrock Park. It represents
a significant change of use for the site which should not happen
without a formal statutory planning process. I'm not convinced that
converting more of Blackrock Park into a surface car park is in the
best interests of the area." |
