Yankee Terrace cottages should be retained – Green Party

The Green Party has criticised the decision by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown county Council to demolish a number of 19th century cottages on Yankee Terrace in Blackrock. The cottages are being demolished so that construction can begin on the Monkstown Ring Road, a stretch of road that will run 1100 metres from Carysfort Avenue to Deansgrange Road.

The controversial Monkstown Ring Road scheme was opposed by the Green Party in 2006. At an An Bord Pleanála Oral Hearing about the application in February 2006, local Green Party TD Ciarán Cuffe drew particular attention to the fact that the cottages on Yankee Terrace should be retained.

Deputy Cuffe said "The Environmental Impact Statement in the report concealed the view of the County Architect that the Yankee Terrace cottages should be retained. I feel it's a real shame to see their destruction for a road that is environmentally unsustainable and which will create more problems than it will solve"

Local Green Party councillor Nessa Childers who opposed construction the Monkstown Ring Road said "Tearing down these cottages in unnecessary and it could have been avoided. They should have been left intact in the first place and the road shouldn't be there. I tabled a motion in the Council to have the road scheme removed from the County Development Plan, which was defeated. It's a shame some of the councillors from other political parties didn't share my point of view on this issue.
