Cuffe welcomes new measures to improve Garda investigations

Green Party Justice spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD has welcomed new measures to improve Garda investigations into serious crimes. The measures, due to be unveiled by Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy today, include the appointment of 21 new detective inspectors in Dublin, special victim interviewers and incident room co-ordinators to free up specialist resources.

Deputy Cuffe said: "I am delighted to see Commissioner Conroy taking on board the recommendations of the Morris Tribunal and the Garda Inspectorate and introducing these modernising measures to the force. Such initiatives can only serve to enhance the work of An Garda Síochána in successfully investigating serious crimes.

"I am particularly pleased to see the introduction of specialist victim interviewers, who will be trained to deal with children under 14, those with special needs and victims of sex crime. It is vital that members of An Garda Síochána are properly equipped to deal with the most vulnerable in our society."
