UN Security Council must take action on Burma - Cuffe

Green Party Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD has called on the UN Security Council to take immediate action to quell the increasingly violent actions of the ruling military junta in Burma.

Deputy Cuffe said "We now know that up to ten people have been killed by the ruling junta's violent crackdown on the peaceful pro-democracy protests that have been taking place for the past number of days. The international community has a responsibility to send a clear and unequivocal message to the military junta in Burma that such human rights violations are not acceptable.

"I support the call of my colleague Dermot Ahern TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs, for the UN Security Council to take immediate and decisive action on this issue. The Green Party has written to the Burmese Consulate in London requesting that the junta allow peaceful protest to take place and to open a genuine and open dialogue to move towards reconciliation."
