Green Party opposes proposed sale of Killiney Golf Course

The Green Party has expressed its concern at media reports that Killiney Golf Course may be sold by its members for housing development.

Dún Laoghaire TD and Green Party Environment spokesman Ciarán Cuffe said today:

"The Green Party is opposed to the loss of any more green space in Dún Laoghaire . We've already seen the rezoning of Dún Laoghaire Golf Course for Development, and Foxrock Golf Course is also under threat. Where will this end?

"We are opposed to sale of Killiney Golf Club, and we will defend the current green space zoning of these lands. Under the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Development Plan 2004-2010 the lands are zoned as 'Objective F - to preserve and provide for open space and recreational amenities.'

"We have no intention of changing this now, or in the future, and we call on representatives of the other political parties to state clearly their own views on this important issue.

"We have lost enough green space in Dún Laoghaire such as the park that was lost when the Pavilion apartments were built on the Marine Road opposite the County Hall in the heart of Dún Laoghaire. The status of other green spaces such as those at the Rockwood at Galloping Green and Leopardstown Avenue is still far from clear. It is crucial therefore that the remaining green spaces such as those at Killiney Golf Course are protected from development.

Green Party Cllr. Tom Kivlehan added: "It does not make sense to allow development on these high amenity lands. The Club is located on the side of Killiney Hill and is one of the most distinctive green spaces in the County. To allow development on the Club's lands would increase traffic congestion, and reduce the amount of amenity land in the County. We are strongly opposed to development at this location.
