The Green Party has lashed out at
the state of the bottle-banks at Newtownpark Avenue in Blackrock.
Piles of litter have been left beside the bottle banks to the rear
of Newtownpark Avenue Shopping Centre. It has called on Dún
Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to put in place a regular
maintenance programme for all the bring centres in the County.
Local Green Party TD Ciarán Cuffe stated: "I was shocked by
the state of the bring centre behind Newtownpark Avenue Shopping
Centre when I visited it last week. If we want people to recycle we
have to provide facilities that are well maintained and that do not
detract from the area. I want to see more bring centres provided in
the County, but if we're to get community support, we'll have to
improve the maintenance of the existing facilities.
"I have spoken with County Council Staff, and I am pleased that they
have given a commitment to improving the maintenance of this Bring
Centre.
Green Party Councillor for Blackrock Nessa Childers said:
"Piles of litter at bring centres can give recycling a bad name. It
is crucial that the Council maintains these centres on at least a
weekly basis. I'm glad that we have ten recycling centres in the
Blackrock area, but many people still don't have these facilities
close to their homes. I want to ensure that everyone in the County
has proper recycling facilities available within walking distance of
where they live. We also need to ensure that they are emptied more
frequently so that people leave bottles beside them due to lack of
space.
Deputy Cuffe added that he still has copies of the Green
Party's 'Green Map' of Dún Laoghaire which shows all the recycling
centres in the County. They can be obtained by calling into his
office at 96 Patrick Street in Dún Laoghaire, or by calling him on
284 6060.
