The Green Party has criticised the
Minister for Justice's proposal to build Detention Centres for those
who claim asylum in Ireland.
Green Party Justice Spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD stated:
"Today's announcement from the Minister for Justice Michael McDowell
that he is considering building Detention Centres for Asylum Seekers
is a crass attack on the most vulnerable.
"Minister McDowell is attempting to
divert attention from the difficulties that asylum seekers face in
Ireland. This announcement comes in a week during which an asylum
seeker claims that his wife starved to death in a Galway hostel. The
body of 27-year-old Brenda Kwesikazi Mohammed, a Nigerian national
was found in her bed in a hostel in Salthill near the city of Galway
on January 6. Her husband Bashiru Mohammed Dauda blamed Irish
authorities for her death.
"Asylum seekers need care and
assistance, rather than concrete holding pens. Their applications
for asylum should be dealt with efficiently and in a transparent and
accountable manner by the State. That is not happening under the
current Minister for Justice.
"Minister McDowell should
concentrate his efforts on improving the lot of asylum seekers,
rather than imprisoning them. |
