Greens welcome reform at top level of An Garda Síochána

- Calls for debate on Morris and Barr Tribunals

The Green Party this evening welcomed recommendations for radical reforms at the top management level of An Garda Síochána. The recommendations are contained in two reports published today by the Garda Síochána Inspectorate headed by former Boston police chief Kathleen O'Toole, and by the Garda Síochána Advisory Group, chaired by Senator Maurice Hayes.

Green Party Justice spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD said: "The Green Party welcomes today's recommendations. They recognise the need for a complete overhaul of the top management structure of An Garda Síochána. I am pleased to see that a new civilian post at Deputy Commissioner level with responsibility for administration is in the offing, as well as a new post of Assistant Commissioner for Professional Standards.

"Minister McDowell must implement these vital recommendations without delay.

"I am also calling on him to allow time for a long overdue debate in the Dáil on the findings of the Morris Tribunal and the Barr Tribunal," concluded Deputy Cuffe.
