Four Courts Dublin Green Party repeats call for immediate legislative reform to protect young people

- as DPP drops charge in statutory rape case

The Green Party has again called for immediate action in response to the Supreme Court judgement earlier this week striking down the law that made it an automatic crime to have sex with a girl under the age of 15.  The call comes as a man who had been charged with having sex with a 14-year-old girl was allowed withdraw his plea of guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today.

Green Party Justice spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD said:  "It is vital that the Oireachtas takes this opportunity to produce a contemporary piece of legislation that will protect all Irish teenagers and children.

"The Law Reform Commission recommended that this legislation be reformed back in 1990.  I am again calling on the Minister for Justice to bring forward a piece of legislation incorporating the recommendations of the Commission without delay."
