Green Party says continuing problems at Sellafield highlight nuclear problem

The Green Party says that continuing problems at Sellafield highlight the urgent need for Government action. The European Commission today criticised British Nuclear Group Sellafield (BNGSL) for being in breach of the EU's strict nuclear safeguard standards.

Green Party Environment spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe said:
"This censure of Sellafield management is only the latest in the series of bad news which reinforces Ireland's concerns over the plant. Rather than the British nuclear wind-down that seemed likely a few years ago, all the indications now are that Britain is likely expand its nuclear programme in the coming years.

"Irish people are legitimately concerned about the heath and environmental implications of Britain's nuclear programme and I am again calling on Minister Roche to visit the Sellafield plant and convey these concerns face to face to the British authorities," concluded Deputy Cuffe.
