RELEASE Government
must tackle climate change now The
Green Party has called on the Government to take Climate Change seriously in the
light of a report issued today by the European Environmental Agency which warns
of costly storms and floods if present trends continue. The
Party's Planning spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD said today that; "Recent
weather events as well as this report confirm that climate change has become a
reality. Ireland's climate change emissions are already running at double the
increase allowed for under the Kyoto Protocol. Martin Cullen, Minister for the
Environment, must take effective action to tackle this issue." "Building
motorways and incinerators is not the answer. Instead we must improve public
transport, make changes in the building regulations and get industry to play its
part in reducing emissions." ENDS/ |
