PRESS RELEASE

 ‘DUN LAOGHAIRE RECYCLING RECORD PATHETIC'

- GREEN PARTY

The Green Party has criticised Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Council over its record on recycling. Less than 15% of households in the greater Dún Laoghaire area have a recycling wheelie-bin service.

"The County Manager is dragging his heels on this important project", stated Councillor Ciarán Cuffe of the Green Party. "Why are thirty thousand households left waiting?"

A spokesperson for Oxigen who supply the green wheelie-bin service to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Council stated that there is an intention to double the amount of recycling routes by the end of the year.

"This is not going far enough", stated Mr. Cuffe, "I believe that every household should be given the choice of recycling at their doorstep.

"Promises were made over the years to provide green wheelie bins, yet many households are still waiting. People are paying high enough waste charges as it is, and they should at least be offered the recycling service.

"From Blackrock to Booterstown and as far south as Bray there are people who want to recycle, who were promised recycling and who are angry that the service has not been provided.

I have written to the Derek Brady, the County Manager, asking that the service be extended to all households within the County."
